The inside of your mouth is lined with a smooth, coral pink special skin called mucosa. An examination is warranted if there is any alteration of the appearance of the mucosa, oral cancer being the most dangerous of the possible conditions. uld be addressed if any of the following signs present:
- A sore or lesion that bleeds easily or refuses to heal
- Presence of bumps or lumps in the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing or chewing, accompanied by hoarseness or a chronic sore throat
- The lumping or thickening of the mucosa (skin lining the mouth)
- Leukoplakia (white patches on the mucosa)
- Erythroplakia (red patches on the mucosa)
The above conditions may present themselves on the palate, cheeks, gum tissue, tongue, face, neck or lips. Dr. Senehi recommends performing a periodic self-examination to assess for any suspicious sores or lumps. A biopsy may be required to rule out the possibility of further treatment or a pathological process.
