Investing in your smile with dental bonding
A great and confident smile often means a better you. At Facial and Oral Surgery Institute, Dr. Navid Senehi is a well-known dentist and medical doctor who is skilled at creating stunning and beautiful smiles. A smile restoration process this is often considered by FOSI patients because of its ease, and non-invasive application is dental bonding.
What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding is the structural and cosmetic repair and reshaping of an existing tooth for the purpose of improving appearance and function. Dental bonding typically involves the use of a durable plastic resin material that is electronically sculpted by skilled FOSI dental technicians under the direction of Dr. Senehi using the latest in dental CAD-CAM technology.
Once the tooth positioned and shaped, the resin is hardened using a highly specialized dental curing light.
When would I use dental bonding?
Dental bonding is a process for addressing a wide variety of structural and common aesthetic concerns, such as:
- Chipped teeth
- Fractured teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Decayed teeth
- Discolored teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Unattractive teeth
- Exposed roots
- Gaps in teeth
It won't replace a completely missing tooth, but it will do wonders when it comes to repairing almost everything else. The resin-based composite materials when completed result in a natural, beautiful looking tooth.
The dental bonding process
1. We begin with an initial consultation with Dr. Navid Senehi
During the initial consultation, Dr. Senehi and his team of dental technicians work with each of our patients to determine which treatment plan is best for their situation. The initial consultation is also an excellent opportunity to evaluate other tooth restoration options including porcelain veneers, dental implants, Zygomatic dental implants, All-On-Four® dental implants, full mouth reconstruction, smile in a day, and Invisalign®. Dr. Senehi and the world-class dental technicians and medical personnel at Facial and Oral Surgery Institute will answer all your questions as well as provide you with all the information you may need to address any of your concerns.
2. Choose and apply tooth shade selection
A shade guide is used to help our patients select the perfect color. The goal is to choose a color for the treated tooth that will allow it to blend in beautifully with the surrounding existing teeth.
3. Tooth is molded and etched with our CAD-CAM technology
Once the tooth shade selection is complete, Dr. Senehi and his dental technicians will prepare the target tooth or teeth for the dental bonding procedure. This preparation process involving etching and conditioning the teeth to ensure that the dental resin adequately adheres to the tooth’s surface. Etching is an entirely painless process that will not require local or general anesthesia.
4. Tooth conditioning
Physical etching is then typically followed by tooth conditioning or chemical etching. Dr. Senehi will apply a liquid or gel-based dental acid onto the tooth to remove any organic detritus and ensure a clean surface on which the dental resin can adhere.
5. Resin application
Once the tooth is adequately etched and conditioned, it’s time for the resin to be applied. A moldable resin composite is carefully applied to the tooth.
6. Resin molding and sculpting
With the resin applied, Dr. Senehi's team carefully shapes, molds, and sculpts the composite material into the ideal shape. Depending on the issues that require correcting, the resin can be used to fill in cracks and gaps, cover discoloration, elongate short teeth, and even be sculpted to restore broken or damaged teeth.
7. Resin curing
When the shape of the tooth is finalized, the resin composite material is then exposed to a unique dental curing light that triggers polymerization and subsequent hardening.
8. Resin finishing
Finally, with the resin shaped, sculpted, and permanently hardened in place, Dr. Senehi and his team will proceed to apply finishing touches to the final work such as polishing and additional shaping to ensure a perfect, natural look.
How long does the dental bonding process take?
Dental bonding is a relatively rapid procedure. Patients can be in and out and go about their days in as little as half an hour for small applications. More complex situations require treatment where the process will take longer. As a rule of thumb, expect each tooth to take about 30 minutes to one hour to complete. A patient who requires dental bonding on several teeth, for example, may need a treatment session that lasts for a few hours. Once the resin has been cured and the final product polished and finished, most clients can immediately resume their day-to-day responsibilities.
Post-procedure recovery times and pain are practically nonexistent.
How much does dental bonding cost?
Several factors must be considered to determine the actual costs for dental bonding. Factors such as the scope and complexity of the bonding work, the number of teeth involved, whether other cosmetic procedures must be performed in addition to dental bonding, and many other factors. Less complex dental bonding procedures will vary from $100 to a few hundred dollars per tooth based on the mentioned factors.
Dental bonding is an art
Dental bonding is more than a dental procedure, it’s an art form. While the functional and pragmatic goals are clear cut, aesthetic concerns are considerably harder to quantify, and as a result, significantly harder to achieve. Like the art of sculpting, a dental bonding treatment requires a professional like Dr. Senehi who has an eye for color, shine, depth, shape, and proportion. In many ways, bonding procedures reflect the professionals like Dr. Senehi who perform such dental procedures.
This is why it's important to choose the right dentist who has the right cosmetic dentistry experience and a strong portfolio of past work and happy clients that you can refer to. That’s what makes Dr. Senehi and Facial and Oral Surgery Institute in Woodland Hills, California so special.
